Backgrounds can be as simple as getting ANY picture and smudging it.. There are going to be changes on this forum soon with many tutorials such as this, so stay tuned, stick around and you'll learn a hell of a lot.

Right now just search around for "Smudging Tutorials" and you'll find alot out there that will give you a basic idea of the groundwork of bg's.

For example i work with main picture to do background, i use many copies of it, then i just change it, maybe it's not the most correct but i use it

two that i do....

1st

1) open up your layers and fill the background with black
2) duplicate it so that you have 4 of them
3) hide(click the eye thing) the top three
4) on the first one take a color from your render then take a brush and brush around the untill it fills most the layer
5) now with the same color and a diff brush go to the third layer and do the same thing
6) hide the third and go to the second layer
7) find a new color on the render and a new brush and do the same thing as you halve all ready done.
8] now do the the same color diff brush on the forth layer
9) now that you have all of them filled go to the second one and change the modes till you find something that looks good to you and continue on with the other ones
10) right click in the layers and "murge visible" < if you dont do this it could mess you up when trying to do depth

2ed

1) take a main color from your render and fill your background with it.
2) past your layer in a new layer
3) make a layer between the render and the background and fill it up with copys of your render
4) go to filters>blur>gaussian blur, put the settings to somewhere close to: 8 horizontal 8 vertical blur method = IIR
5) now go to filters>noise>pick. find something that you like by moveing the random and repet bars
6) finally go to filters>blur>motion blur. change the langth to what you like and then change the angle so that it flows with your render.
7) OPTIONAL: now that you have that done, if your main background is not white, you can change the mode to multiply. sometimes it makes it look better and sometimes it dosent...

hope this helps and makes sense, if you need more information or pictures on what i did let me know ^_^

btw this is for gimp (not sure how much of a difference there will be with in PS if thats what you use)

i choose 2 colors from the render 1light and 1 dark (i make the light 1 the foreground and the dark one the background) then i apply a radial gradient so it looks like a light source is already there then paste the render ,after just duplicate it 3 times then smudge those 3 copys

easiest way is to duplicate a render several time, make a new layer and apply the image, then smudge it some, i prefer just finding a stock then find a render that matchs it for color compo and the such ;)

for brushes ya best off looking on deviantart, and brusheezy.com , they've got thousands so ;)
they can make sigs better but it all depends on the application, ya need to make sure they fit, and flow with the piece in question, just randomly putting brushes in a piece can ruin so, experiment it and see what works and what dont, ;)

just brushes, or smudging renders, i mostly do realism so i use a stock image an manip it abit to suit it then add smudging and brushes.
