Beginner question path in GIMP

Hello! I am new at using GIMP and trying to make my first signature. Please forgive my lack of knowledge on the 'lingo' and whatnot.

I am trying to 'cut out' a character using a path. I have it all laid out, but I can't get the part I cut off to go away. How do I do that?
