Blending or smudging tutorial for gimp?

Could someone make a blending or smudging tutorial for gimp? pz!!, i am alright with the BG's now, but still not good at blending the image into it.

A good technique would be to copy the render you want and set the original to gaussian, around 4 or 5. You can also take a light, soft, brush and soften the edges of your render...

A technique I like to use is to apply a filter of some kind to the render and the background and then use a soft, light brush to erase part of it so the focal point stands out clearer.
