You don't always have to cut it out. Try using it as a stock instead, but if your really desperate to get it cutout then you can go to www.planetrenders.net and request it to be cut out (altough you have to pay a little bit of money). Altough if I were you then I would just use it as a stock.

There are tutorials you can find online (google it) to retouch hair. You can pretty much
create, expand, clone, clipping all those fancy words to make your gf hair look like
other renders. Without messing it up to bad. Editing photos pretty much. I know what you are talking about.
I once had GIMP but the hair part was difficult to cut out so I gave up, saved up, and got photoshop lol. What a bum I have become.
Just a heads up in the directions you can go if you can't get more specific details. GIMP is hard to use compared to PS.
If you do find something in doing this with GIMP let me know I would like to see how to go about this.;)

zoom in to 1 pixel ratio and use a soft brush to delete parts easy , takes time but can be done
may i ask what the stock is?
A stock is pretty much any picture that hasn't been cut out yet.

what i do is apply a selective gaussian blur on 15 (it makes it loook like a painting while making it less complex to cut hair out )
