There have been a lot of gimp users who have trouble getting new fonts into gimp. I fixed that problem on my comp by updating gimp to the latest. (2.6.6) Gimp doesn't get rid of your old scripts and brushes but it is a good idea to back them up before updating. After installing 2.6.6 gimp shouldn't crash at font rescan. If your new fonts don't show up just go to Text tool>Font: (Just click on the font change button) >Open the font selection dialog (Rightmost button, just hover over them to find it) >Configure this tab > Rescan font list or the rescan button at the bottom of the configure tab.
