Getting Started

Is there any free software that I can start learning how to create these beautiful signatures & wall papers & stuff. I would like to learn, and I took a graphic design class in high school so I'm not completely ignorant. I just need to learn how to gear what I've learned toward art. Help? Suggestions?

ok theres gimp its realy good i use it and if you have a torrent you can download somthing like photoshop. if you want the link for gimp just pm noobie k
