oke i am writing this for gimp beginners who feel that they cannot make good stuff because they dont hve some of those photoshop's adjustment options/filters
this is totally untrue, i hve used both softwares and gimp is totally capable of doin what photoshop can do in most cases, sometimes it just takes a few more steps, the only huge advantage photoshop has over gimp is its brush settings technology, any ways, most of u old gimpers would know this stuff already but this if for beginners to help them get started, i'll assume that the reader is fimiliar with gimp's navigation menu's, these specific 1s are for gimp 2.4
Admustment Layers
1 - Gradient Map
Go to edit menu then copy visible, then paste, it will be pasted as a floating selection, right click on it in layers dialog and click new layer, now its a layer
then set ur fg and bg colors to the 1s u want or select one of the gradients provided by gimp using gradient tool, once u hve made ur choice simply go
Colors>Map>Gradient Map
experiment with different blending modes and opacity till u find something u like
2 - Photo Filter
its very simply, create a new layer with white background, set ur fg color to the color u wana apply photo filter with, after that just use ur bucket fill tool to fill the newly created layer, make sure fg fill is selected in its options, now just set the mode of that layer to color, and lower the opacity till u find wt ur looking for
3 - Other adjustment layers (Brightness/Contrast. Heu/Saturation. levels. curves etc)
Edit > Copy Visible then paste and make it new layer
then go to color menu and choose ur desired option, experiment till u find the settings u like
Blending Options
1 - Stroke
pretty simple: select the layer u wana stroke in ur layers dialog, right click and click on alpha to selection
then simple set ur FG color to ur desired color, i suggest create a new layer so u can change the opacity and mode if u want to, then with ur newly created layer selected go Edit>Stroke Selection
2 - Gradient Over lay
duplicate the layer u wana apply that on, set ur fg&bg color or choose a gradient from gradient tool, go color>map>gradientmap
change the mode and opacity to ur desired outcome
3 - Outer Glow
to create outer glow we will hve to stroke it 1st, so right click on the layer u want outer glow on, click alpha to selection (it will be under the transparency menu if not under the main menu) change ur foreground color to ur desired color, make a new layer and go Edit>Stroke selection, make it a lil thicker like 5-10 depending on how much glow u want
now duplicate that layer 2 times, now u shud have 3 layers with the stroke, now on the layer above go filter>blur>guassian Blur and blur it by a large number like 75-80, gaussian blur the middle layer but reduce the number to like 45-50 and finally guassian blur the 3rd layer by even a lesser number like 20-25
optional: merge these 3 layers and play around with different modes and opacity
4. Inner Glow
right click on ur layer then alpha to selection, now go Select>shrink and shrink it according to how thick the inner glow u want, for example if u want a 3 px inner glow, shrink it by 3 px, after u hve shrinked it, choose ur fg color, create new layer and go edit>stroke selection, after that is same as outer glow so follow the rest of the steps
5 - Drop Shadow
well u can use the drop shadow filter located under Filters>Light and Shadow>Drop Shadow
or here is how u do it manually
right click ur layer then click alpha to selection, set ur fg color to black or a dark shade of grey, create new layer, and on the new layer fill ur selection with ur fg color using the bucket fill tool, now move this black/grey filled layer to the bottom of ur original layer, and move it a lil to the bottom right, just like 4-5 pixels, if u find hard to do it with the mouse then just select the move tool and click the down key 5 times then the right key 5 times, or to ur desired out come
now u can play with different blending modes and opacity to experiment a lil
Well thats all for now, i hope these can help some of u new gimpers out there =)
