I dunno if you can do this in GIMP but in PS, you make the line you want to be glowin or w/e. Then right click on it an click stroke.

ok the effect won't be exactly the same. But use the paths tool and make a few lines then go and click stroke path,a window will pop up and say how big you want the line.Put it to 1,and see if you like it.The result will be similar to this

and like some of the lines in my signature.Hope this helped :D

select your brush tool, then go to the brush pallete (the menu where you choose your brushes) and its under shape dynamics :)
fade is cool, but be aware that you have to set it up for the distance you want, I usually just use pen pressure, it works like fade but you don't have to set the distance.
but! it will fade at both ends (if you don't want it 2 you can then just erase the side you didn't want to fade) and can take a little to get used 2, because of the fade (you'll see if you try it) :D

That's pretty nice. Here is what I did in mine after alpha logo> glowing hot,
I've deleted the layer where I have my stroke and then duplicated the glow and Gaussian blurred the duplicate.
And here is what I did for this:

First go to the paintbrush tool, then click fade out, if your stroke is long, just adjust the length.
Second, make your path design and then click the stroke path, when that window appears, select the Stroke with a paint tool then be sure you've selected the paintbrush tool, and there you go. Tell me if its corrected.
Here is what I've come out:
