this is a simple tut to show you some special fx i found via tuts and experimenting first im going to show you how to make a light saber

first we need to open the gimp once you open the gimp we need to go to the main menu and go file>dialogs>create new dock>layers, channels, paths, undo
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled2.jpg
click on that a little box should come up that looks like this
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled3.jpg
then we want to go file>open then open the image your going to use
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled1.jpg
then next we need to understand a little tiny bit about gimp before we continue
first if you click on the layers dialog in your new doc and have a look at it.
if you go click on new layer and make it black by clicking white then going back to your main menu and changing your foreground colour to black then make sure you have your new layer visible and drag your colour over to the image and let go you will have a black bg. you cant see your image anymore right?
well thats bechuse the layers dialog is like a camera if you put something on top of your image the camera is going to see that and not your image right well thats exactly the same with the layers dialog so now what we want to do is click on your newly established layer and go up until you see the mode selection and click on it and scroll down until you find the mode called screen now where going to click on that
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled7.jpg
now where going to make sure we have our top layer thats on screen checked. then what we need to do is go back to the main menu for gimp and click on the paths tool.
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled8.jpg
now we go back to our pic and click on the part we want to make lightsaber and put a path around the edges of our sword.
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled9.jpg
now what we want to do is go back to our new doc and click on the paths part of it and you should see the path you just made
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled10.jpg
now what we want to do now is click on your new path go down and find the square looking button and click on it
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled11.jpg
next we want to click on our brush tool
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled12.jpg
and change your fg colour to white then select your biggest circle brush and paint over your path
now we want to right click go to select then none then we want to go back to our doc and click on the layers dialog then click on our top layer (the black one) then go down and click on the button that looks like 2 sheets of paper twice now you should have 4 layers all up then we want to click on your original layer and then where going to go back to the image menu and go to filters>blur>guasion blur a new window will now come up that looks something like this make sure you have the settings the same as me
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled16.jpg
then we need to go to our next layer and do the same but put the settings up to 20 then we will do the same to the next layer and make it 40. now you need to merge your layers so what we do is click on the top layer and right click merge down then do that to the next again then reset there modes to screen. now if you want a white colour for your lightsaber then your done but if not follow along with me plz. we now need to go to layer>colour>colour balance and a new tab will come up then what we want to do now is fiddle with it until you like the colour
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg68/storm28_photo/untitled15.jpg
(optional)then now where where going to do some touch ups what we do is go to layer colours brightness and contrast and fiddle with that until your lightsaber stands out above all things
