This is the tutorial...
http://www.absolutecross.com/tutorials/photoshop/effects/4way-fire/

I get to the end of step 3 and everything appears to be ok...the workplace looks like (see below) and my layer pallette has the merged background + the hidden copy text layer

http://www.angelfire.com/folk/memorial/bobby2.jpg

When I try step 4 Image » Mode » Grayscale I get this popup
message box that says Changing modes will affect composition. Flatten image before mod change?..and 3 options "Flatten Cancel Dont flaten". If I choose any option then 2 things will occur...I either loose my text layer cause it merges with the background OR the Image » Mode » Color Table function is greyed out(unavailable). In any case I can't properly fullfil the steps to achieve the effect...at best I get this....

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what I doing wrong or missing? btw I using PS #8 (CS). Thank you

i see wt your saying, it flattens the image when u go to indexed color mode
well wt i can say just copy ur hidden layer to a new document before doing that step, and when u need that hidden layer, go to that other document. copy it and paste it back to ur original and proceeed

I took your advice and was able to do it but now I can't get the text on the background.

I tried with no luck to layer a text of my name CUTTS onto a signature backgound but fail everytime.

Can someone scale the text down and place it in the righthand cornor. If it would help to have psd instead of the jpeg versions below then I can provide them...thanks in advance. If this is inappropriate and should be in sig reqest...please move it. I wasn't sure.....
