Looks fun, something I'll have to remember because I just want focus on Sig's make them my specialty I guess.

noobie
09-30-2007, 03:03 PM
Its really easy to do, this one is...and once you get the hang of the basics, there are plenty more advanced tutorials on the site, this is just a good one to teach you the basics :D
And once you learn to make sigs, then avatars and userbars just come naturally :D...in fact, many say signatures are harder, so youll be well away if you do the sigs first

Damnum
09-30-2007, 03:20 PM
yeah just took me like a 1 hour understand and figure out all the stuff was.. complicated but fun trying something you have never done before.

I went to your Signature tut, and I'm lost on what a render is. can't find out what exactly you mean by that.

Beast
09-30-2007, 06:42 PM
A render is a picture that you want to use in your sig. www.planetrenders.net is the site that noobie mentioned to me. It helps alot because most of them don't have a background.

Damnum
09-30-2007, 06:44 PM
Thanks for informing me =)

After a hour of working and reading the tut that noobie made i came up with this

weres is the gradient tool and b linear at? Havin same problem finding em <=|

Also if you might be able to lend a hand, for some reason the second box in my GIMP doesn't open any more... When I open GIMP, the tool box and the TotD come up but no layers box, I thought I could live with just having a layers dock but it's becoming a hassle, what can I do?

I've gone as far as re installing GIMP and still no luck on that.

noobie
10-28-2007, 06:50 PM
Lol, no worries hun, ive had loads message me asking the same question lol, everyone seems to do it....right...

go to file in the main The Gimp box
go down to dialogs
go to create new dock
Then click on any in there that youre missing :D

The gradient tool looks like this

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/7657/gradtg3.png (http://imageshack.us)

make sure you click on the pic to get it in better view

The circle shows the gradient tool with an arrow pointing towards all the options that come with it, like bi-linear etc

Any more questions, just ask :D Hope this helped

firechameleon
10-29-2007, 02:33 PM
hey noobie how so i save my image cause it wont let me!!??

if u want to save an unfinished sig, u have to put in .xcf (for gimp) at the end.. to save a finished sig, u'll have to put either .jpg or .png for non-animated sigs and .gif for animated sig......... i recommend .png for non-animated sigs..........

how can i get a nice blue color to use in gimp

noobie
10-30-2007, 09:08 AM
when you click on the colour box, you just play around by clicking on the bar at the side of the box that pops up, then to get a more acurate colour, you click in the big box :D then press ok

Storm
10-30-2007, 09:39 AM
ok thanks noobie but theres just one more thing i need to know before ive done my first sig how do i add a background??

noobie
10-30-2007, 10:32 AM
a background or border?

Storm
10-30-2007, 11:20 AM
um sorry a boarder. and with your first tut in part of it you say to zoom in and then go to layers paths and something else then click on the first button what button was that whats it called cause i cant do the thing that you did in the tut

noobie
10-30-2007, 06:33 PM
Ah yeah, i think i buggered up on the tut there......i think you mean when youre about to cut around a pic.....You zoom in x800.....then click on this tool...

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9467/77262040ki8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Then you make your path around it like i show you in the tut

Then go to this.....

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4603/41295793ow3.png (http://imageshack.us)

Thats where you do the next steps like path to selection etc

To add a border, go to....script-fu....decor...add border.....then put in 1 pixel in both width and height

i'm lost......... what exactly do u want to do.........?

I'm trying to get the picture (Seen before on my screenshot) to show the background rather than the picture. I'm trying to create the render I guess is how you would say it.

I make the entire path, follow the directions, then when I delete the path and press alpha to selection nothing happens. Everything goes back to square 1.

noobie
11-20-2007, 02:35 AM
once you press alpha to selection, press ctrl and i then ctrl and k
ctrl and i selects it and ctrl and k deletes the bit you dont want
see if that works

noobie
11-24-2007, 02:07 PM
we figured it out earlier, if you have any version above 2.2 then there are bugs that havent been fixed...so you will have to uninstall gimp and install the older version for now...or you can just use a small round brush to erase the background.make sure you zoom in well though

redruM
11-24-2007, 02:13 PM
Oh great! I will uninstall no problem and will try it out soon.

I was putting on the final touches of the tut. What are some good fonts for sigs? I was about to use Rockwell, I think.

noobie
11-24-2007, 07:59 PM
i think it all depends on the style of sig to be honest, and i always have trouble deciding which font to use, i think if you just download a lot of them, and keep trying them all out to see which looks best, its trial and error really

moose
11-24-2007, 10:01 PM
There are definently alot of fonts to download

jonstosik
12-23-2007, 04:54 AM
uhh this may be a stupid question, but, what is gimp?

Vintage
12-23-2007, 05:38 AM
To jonstosik, gimp is like photoshop. Its free though. And theres a few differences give or take.

Also, if you get something from planet renders, do you still have to render it out of the background if your using a different background?

Say i was using this background:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x236/DSFVINTAGE/signature3.png
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x236/DSFVINTAGE/signature3.png
And i wanted to put this render in it:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x236/DSFVINTAGE/mr.jpg
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x236/DSFVINTAGE/mr.jpg

Would i still have to render the ghost?

I also got that background myself :) Wanna know how i did it? I used one layer :) All i did was copy pasted some small pictures of jupiter, rendered them, then put them in, then got the blur tool, and used blur.

Vintage
12-23-2007, 10:24 AM
With the border, i cant find the layers channel box, well i probably cant, it just dosnt say script.fu decor anywhere! :(

noobie
12-23-2007, 06:44 PM
Vintage.....the images you get from planet renders already have the background taken out, so you would h=just have to pop the pic on your background and no rendering required.

also what version of gimp are you using, if its 2.4 thats the problem as there are a few errors on it, 2.2 is the best hun

rainyyy12
12-23-2007, 06:58 PM
Pretty amazing dude. After reading that my head hurt. I have GIMP, but I could never do that

noobie
12-23-2007, 07:14 PM
aww you could hun, honest, once you do this sig, youll have the basics easy....the outcome of this one isnt that good, but itll teach you the basics anyhow...then youll be able to follow most tutorials :)

noobie

Theyre both equally good. I think it all depends on what you get used to, to be honest.
I prefer gimp for the animation still, but i prefer photoshop for the general sig making. :D

as well as this one

and i want them on a 350x200 scale board cause 350x120 is not big enough for these images bt when i try to scale jsut one image takes up 3/4 of the area and when i try to edit just width alone it moves height automaticaly so i cant use them, makin me angry lol

ctrl+k doesn't work in GIMP 2.4 or any higher then that.

hackgod
03-26-2008, 03:15 AM
Well just apply the border to the background. and add another border in another colour. now you have two frames. double click each frame in the "layers" menu and write in brackets (100ms) and press enter. Now go to animation>playback.

You see the border being animated. lol

ok here's what you gotta do
once you have clicked on the outline of the man,go to dialogs, and click Paths.
When that comes up you should be able to see "unnamed" right click on it and do Path To Selection.
Now click ctrl+i or go to select and press invert. Then if your using gimp 2.4+ press the delete key on your keyboard. If your using gimp 2.2 just press ctrl+k.
Then go to dialogs>paths>and delete your unnamed. And just follow rest of the tutorial

After doing the path around the picture.Minimize the window, and click path to selection in the main gimp window. You can do path to selection after you click the paths tab.
Then just right click on your signature. Then go to edit>cut. Then open a new 400x150 or document and just paste it there.and do your background :)

Hey dude, I figured this out. They call this rendering. You can check out a video I watched on youtube. Just search for 'render gimp' and you'll find it. He shows how to do it on a pic of Jack Sparrow.

The only problem I had with it is the control k part. Instead of doing that, just push delete.

I hope you figure it out, if not feel free to IM me on yahoo- jessicatae

Ok for everyone having some trouble, we don't have very many experianced GIMPers any more by the looks of it. I can't through a Tutorial togetehr but I can explain it decently.

The Gradiant tool is a little square icon shading from black to white, from left to right respectivley, it is actually named Shading Tool in newer versions of GIMP. Once selected, there will be an option menu that appears under neath the tools, in this area tehre will be a 'Shape' option, this will be set to Linear by default, hit the drop down box and find Bi-Linear.

Try and choose Gradient colours that compliment your render. Click and drag until you have something not too bad. Apply your images via File > Open As LAyers > Image. Select your pathing or Paths tool, trace the outline of your image as closely as you can, or as closely as you can be bothered. :P

Ctrl + K does not work any more. You must invert your path, so in the options section of your tools pannel, hit the 'Selection from path' button. should make the ants walk around teh picture, Ctrl + I, this inverts the image so you get rid of the outside stuff, then Ctrl + X. You should be left with nothing but the image you outlined.

If this wasn't enough to really push it over the edge, I decided I'll record myself following this tutorial, so you can see step by step what to do, shouldn't betoo long.
