This is the first one I've made myself. I know it is pretty basic but what do you think.

Pretty good for a first try. I'm going to assume you used photoshop.
First I must ask what font you used for the text.
Second, did you disable Anti-Aliasing for the text? Be sure you do if you didn't.
Third, try creating a new layer, then select all from the edit menu, then go to stroke, and create an inner stroke of any color, 1 pixel, and then deselect all. This will give you a nice 1 pixel border, I use a 1 pixel black border.
Try those things to make it look more clean and more pro.
Some other advice, you could attempt to make it look glossy, by overlaying a white to transparent gradent from top to bottom and lowering the opacity and messing around with that, you'll get more of a shiny 3d type of look.
You could also try putting a picture of a real player near the middle and having it really transparent or a background of a football field faded out and stuff like that.
Just a few ideas to improve on it. Maybe you should give it another attempt trying some of these things and making it look even better.
Good luck, and hopefully you will attempt to make more and hit me up if you have any questions, i will try to help.

Thats a good start, so well done buddy :)
My suggestions..
1.) Use font Visitor with a black stroke
2.) Stick a border on the bar.
Other than that Mowery's more detailed ideas are worth following up on too... Good work guys..
