i had the same problem as you.So this is what i suggest to you.Go to http://www.gimp.org/
and get the latest version of the program.then read this tutorial http://www.signaturebar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2992
It's a bit outdated and made for GIMP 2.2 but it's pretty much the same.If you don't know what tool is what is what, check this site out.It tells you exactly what tool does what

The pictures for the tools may look different then the ones you will have when you get GIMP.But they look the same except colored differently.Or you can just hold your mouse over a tool to know what it's name is.
