unlucky noobie, We have a wasp nest in our loft. They found a gap in our roof and got it... They usually dissapear in the winter so not bothered right now.. but I guess i should get somone to get rid of them too...

Well, the bloke told me that they make the nest normally about may time, but we dont normally notice them till about september time....i rung the local council to get rid of it and they charged ?30 plus vat....but depending on wether they need ladders and runners, it could go up to about ?55.
So i suppose its not too bad. Theres no way i could have left mine as it was at my front door. I had one years ago in the attic, and they found there way to my kids bedroom, was awful. But the bloke that came round today said if they manage to get in the house that normally means theyre on their way for dying. Just so lucky my lad didnt get stung, there were loads :(:(

Precautions
For the person who simply wants to avoid being stung there are a number of precautions that you can take which we have divided into three types:
* Personal Protection - ensuring that you are the least attractive object in the immediate environment to the wasp, hornet or bee.
* Environmental Care - trying to make the environment around you the less attractive to the stinging insect population
* Medical Protection - protecting yourself with medication in anticipation of a sting
All of the advice suggested will still not stop you being stung - they will simply improve the risk of not being stung. Stinging insects are strange creatures and can hurt their victims at the least expected moment and in the least expected place. It is important that we all remember that notwithstanding the dangers to certain allergic people, being obsessed with avoiding these creatures is equally unhealthy and we should talk all these precautions with an element of commonsense.
It is strange the my family cat knows exactly who doesn't like cats - and always chooses them to snuggle up to!
Personal Protection
It is funny that we spend most of our time making our bodies just right to attract others - this web page is dedicated to making our bodies as unattractive as possible to stinging insects!
Smell
The general suggestion is that no smell is better than any smell. Stinging insects have a powerful sense of smell and there is no research out there that I have discovered that recommends that we cloak ourself in a particularly unfriendly smell to wasps. Biting insects like mosquitos can definitely be turned off by insect repellent - the jury is still out on stinging insects so
Avoid Perfumes, After Shave, Perfumed Deoderants and Perfumed Anti-Perspirants.
Appearance and Dress
Stinging Insects are definitely attracted to bright and shiny clothing - especially floral prints and black. Insects seem to be more attracted to white, green, tan or khaki.
Wear sensible clothing - not open toe sandals or shorts when you know you will be in an environment plagues by wasps
Avoid: Coloured Clothing, floral prints, open shoes, and baring too much leg or arm
Medic Alert - www.medicalert.org
Whilst not haut couture jewellery, the organisation Medic Alert provides necklaces and bracelets with vital information on them that can advise prospective medical helpers exactly what is wrong with the unconscious or incapcitated sting victim. Practicality definitely wins over elegance - but seriously, they are reasonably OK to look at and may well save a life! Highly recommended.
Think Postive
Do not panic if a stinging insect comes near to you or lands on you. Either keep still or move very slowly away in the opposite direction. The flapping of arms and hands is particularly threatening to stinging insects so just keep cool and you should be left in peace!
Environmental Care
Stinging insects are everywhere and so the idea of protecting yourself through changing your environment is the first line of defence.
Physical Barriers
You can protect where you life and work (if necessary) by the installation of insect screens at windows and doors. People in cooler climates, like the UK, will find insect screens surprisingly difficult to find - we are looking at different ways of helping those in cooler climes.
Insect screens are particularly difficult to find in the UK and we have a number of links on our links page which may well prove to be of help.
Insect Nests
Be ruthless around your own home and those of your neighbours by looking out for nests and swarms and arranging for them to be either removed or destroyed. Do not try to do this yourself because it is a highly dangerous activity and these insects will very aggressively protect their nest and home.
Picnics and Barbeques
This is probably the most dangerous activity which you will ever undertake if you don't want to be stung. The fact is that food and drink is very attractive to stinging insects and they will sting anything that gets in their way. I am not saying don't do it, just if you do be very careful and watch out for stinging insects in soft drink cans, inside burgers, - anywhere
Garbage (US) and Rubbish (UK) Bins
Whilst wasps love cooked food, they also love rotten food too, and find the smell of nasty bins full of rotting food irresistible. Keep these bins well away from the home and pay extra attention, even indoors, when in the vicinty of the garbage/rubbish bin.
Overall, I just love being outside and doing all the things which probably are very high risk. When I was stung last, it was simply walking between my car and the office, and nothing to do with what I was wearing, food or rotting fruit! The message must be to use your common sense and simply be careful that if you are in environments that are more dangerous than others, you are well protected in other ways, as described elsewhere in this section.
Medical Protection
Medical protection refers to drugs or medication that would be a sensible precaution to take in the event of a wasp sting.
There are to my knowledge no medical aids that can stop you being stung!
The best advice simple: be prepared!
For local reactions, have plenty of ice and off-the-shelf creams and ointments (see Treatments for local reactions)
For allergic reactions, have whatever prescribed or recommended medications immediately available and be prepared for a possible trip to the local A & E or doctor' surgery in the event that the allergic reactions starts to get seriously unpleasant.
For the anaphylactic reaction, have your anaphylactic kit with you at all times and use whatever medication has been prescribed and recommended by your medical adviser. Be prepared for an immediate trip to A & E.
So medicine cannot protect you from insect stings, but being prepared medically can protect you from the effects of those stings considerably.

We had a wasp nest in our front yard once. I beat it with a bat and ran like hell. Amazingly, I got away unscathed.
