need help on GIMP, important...for me

Okay so i just downloaded GIMP on june 20 2009 and i was looking for a tutorial but cant understand them...like example they said "okay first open up a canvas"
but i dont even know how to open a canvas...i need a tutorial that is like this:-
example:
"duplicate a stock" that one i dont understand but like this one "create a new image by clicking file>>new..." like this one i understand...any tutorials like this...need help

Lol mate just try and play around with it and work somethings out by yourself.
For instance "Open up a new canvas", this is pretty common sense isnt it?
Not to sound rude, but in every single program to open up a 'new something' You need to go to File>New.
Its only your first day, play around with the program yourself first and find where everything is. If you don't know, google it and ask "How do I duplicate a layer in GIMP" or something, 9 times out of 10 you will find it yourself.
