I am seeing the term Gimp a lot, but must have lost my retina's because I cannot find an explanation of exactly what it is, beyond some sort of software. Is this and Photoshop the only types of software that make sigs?

no, any painting/picture program will do, its just that photoshop and gimp are the most used and known :)

Well there's Always Paint.NET it's alot easier

gimp is a free download and has plenty of tuts :)
