Pros/cons on which program to use?

Is there a discussion somewhere on which program is better, costs, etc? I noticed on a few threads that people definately have a preferred software, but I can't really find much info on why.

ok gimp is the free one and is really good for starting however photoshop has more features then gimp and has to be bought. So ps is better than gimp. :D :D
