BACKGROUND TIP

I will explain to you how to get the base background of your siganture to match flawlessly with your Render.

1. Start with your blank document, any size

2. Insert your render.

3. Duplicate the render in witch your layer is locate

4. While you have the duplicated layer selected procceed with the following proccess: Edit>Free Transform

5. Resize the image by draging the right handle all the way to the left on till only a small colom of the render is visible, then drag the top and bottom handle up (you can fiddle with how high/low you raise or lower it)

6. This is important you have to accept the transform (click the little checkmark on in the top left cornor. After you have select the checkmark go back to the free transform and stretch the coloum back out (and maybe even past the canvas's right edge. After accepting the transform then you should have a nice matched background.

HOW TO MAKE A TUTORIAL:
In This Tutorial I will show you hoe to make a....tutorial. I have looked in the "Photoshop Tutorials" section before you have noticed that when people display there tutorials they normally do it with a very long graphic in witch they explain how to do the specified task. I will explain to the best of my ability how to do this.

Tutorial Making in Photoshop
--------------------------------
1. Normally I start off with a canvas at about the size of 500-600px wide and 2000-50000px high (if its to small or large
I will explain how to change in a bit).

2. Now that you have your Canvas ready its time to start building your tutorial. I find it easier to make changes to the background (ex. Color, Border, Pattern) after you have fully constructed your tutorial.

3. When you get into the different layers it can be very confusing and I highly recommend NAMEING all your layers.
4. Start with a title, this needs to be bigger than your regular text so it can be picked out easier.
5. Once you have your title down you have to make a decision, whether you want the directions of the tutorial to below the image that goes with that step or above it. It's your own personal preference.
6. Now you need to create a "Preview" image. This is the image that you see in the tutorial that shows what the current step should look like. Grab your "Rectangle Marquee" tool and drag out a rectangle. Fill this with the desired background and anything else that was included in the step.
7. Repeat this process until all your steps have been created both in a "Preview" image and in text.
8. Finally color your background

RESIZING CANVAS
--------------------
So you need more/less room and you don’t want to start over well i have the answer to your problem. By changing the canvas size WHILE anchored you can increase the height up/down and the width left/right.

To access this option go to Image>Canvas Size. To anchor the top (so it won’t move) press the arrow closest to the top and visa versa for the bottom. The same goes for the left and right.

Tips
---------------------
-Adding a Border and Drop Shadow to your "Preview" images makes them look a lot more appealing

-Always Start your tutorial with a step similar to this
"Create a document by Xx and Xx"
or
"Create a blank document, any size"

-Make sure your font can be read

-Don't make the background to busy, it takes away from the tutorial

-Have fun

START OF TUTORIAL

A. Mental Preparation
This might seem a little silly at first but going into something without a clue isn’t always the best idea. With a mental image in your head you can breeze through the first couple steps no problem
1. Render
If your hear then you ready to start making signatures. (or continue making them). Every great sig starts with a good idea, whether it is thought out ahead of time or just moments before it is made. To start we are going to need to think up a render. Something that will express the rest of the signature. The trick right now is not to get to specific, just vague ideas like: Sports, Celebrity, Animal, and Cartoon. Once you have that category in mind, try going one level lower (to the render) like this:
Basketball, Movie Star, Mammal, Nickelodeon. This will make it easier when you search for your render.
2. Color
This might be difficult at the time but if you don't plan on exactly matching the colors of the render to the background it’s not a bad idea. Get a color in mind, any color. This color will be the main color in your color "scheme". Thinking of sub colors isn’t important yet, as we don't have are render yet.
3. Style
Style is hard to explain in text, but basically it is how your signature is "done". It is "your" way of making signature. It could be your choice of brushes, colors, renders, how big or small your signatures are. Some Signature artists get stuck in a style rut where all there sigs look the same. You want to try to make every signature mean something. Something simple like "how you’re feeling" or something complex like your relationship life. You will then be putting parts of your self into the signature. If you ever have seen a signature and wonder what it was about it that made it so great, you just couldn't put you finger on it, THAT is style.
a. Basic Expression
Here are some basic expression tips/ideas. Blue, purple, green, are all cold colors. The opposite is true for Red, Orange, Yellow, they are warm colors. Using these will give you the ability to give the observer certain sub-conscious thoughts they don't know they are even getting.
b. Advanced Expression
The most advanced expression is YOUR expression. I can't tell you how to express yourself. If however you are finding it hard try this little trick:
Get some crayons and lay them out inform of you. Close your eyes (do this after reading all of it), now think of something that is going on in your life. You can’t just picture it really FEELS that feeling. you almost want to taste the feeling on your lips. Now open your eyes and look around at the crayons, what stands out. what reminds you of that feeling.
B. Choosing the "stuff"
Here we are going to be selecting our render and maybe rethinking are color, style, and expression.
1. Render
This is the first "real process" you will be going through. choosing the render can be difficult as they them selves can be hard to find. one place that you can find good renders for free is [url]www.planetrenders.net[/url. Their renders are very good quality (depends on who rendered them). Search around for the render, if it doesn’t match the color then get it any ways we can always fix this later.
2. Color, Style, Expression RETHINK
If you have had no luck finding a render then your other option would be to find a render that you liked but didn't match your style. Look at the render and try and find a color that reminds you of something you have experienced before. You could also retry the crayon method again.

C. Make it Real
Finally the time has come for you to open your image editing software and start to work on your signature. Lets start of with the background/render.
1. Matching Colors
This is a very important process as this is what sets your sig apart from a render on a solid background (nothing wrong with that). Even if you plan on covering up the background with brushes then any space you don’t cover up with be well match with the render. There a couple of ways to match your render to your background and I will explains/direct you to them in #3 of this section.
2. Blending
Along with matching colors blending the render two the background is also equally as important. without this your render would appear to be floating on top of your background. Again I will explain/direct you on how to do this.
3. Matching/Blending Techniques
This is taken from one of my earlier tutorials
Quote:
I will explain to you how to get the base background of your signature to match flawlessly with your Render.

1. Start with your blank document, any size

2. Insert your render.

3. Duplicate the render in witch your layer is locate

4. While you have the duplicated layer selected proceed with the following process: Edit>Free Transform

5. Resize the image by dragging the right handle all the way to the left on till only a small column of the render is visible, then drag the top and bottom handle up (you can fiddle with how high/low you raise or lower it)

6. This is important you have to accept the transform (click the little checkmark on in the top left corner. After you have select the checkmark go back to the free transform and stretch the column back out (and maybe even past the canvas's right edge. After accepting the transform then you should have a nice matched background.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tips:
-If your render isn’t square then you'll have to stretch the render more
-Obviously make sure your stretched layer is behind the proportionate layer.
Blending is a different story, to properly blend your background and render you are going want to remove the "seems" or where the render meets the background. You could cover the edges up with a fancy brush that your using in your background, or your could blur the edges of the render. Being creative on how to do this will only make you better
3. Style
Style in the signature as I have already explained id very important. When you’ve got your render and background blended it is time to add some style.
a. Expression through style
Some of my favorite ways to add style is with some grunge brushes, some gradient layers, and even more renders. This is where I can't TELL you what to do you have to come up with your own ideas. Really try to match your feelings with the why your signatures look. After all your signatures can only be as different as you.
b. Adjustments
Final adjustments to a signature can be crucial. Whether it be a lighting change or just some touch up work. Remember thought "If its not broke, DON'T FIX IT". You can fiddle all these settings but make sure your not over doing it.
D. Conclusion
1.What did we learn
We learned all about expressions and style and how to match colors.
2.What can we do
You can do anything you want, don't hold back let your imagination run wild.
3.Have fun
That’s what this is really all about if your not having fun then don't do it.
Thanks again guys this was really fun to write and I hope this helps

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SIGS:
RIPPERS we all hate them, but there are ways of stopping them and here is one way
----------------------------------
First off Save the picture below (Right Click>Save Picture as>whatever.png)
http://i26.tinypic.com/i6dzix.png
Now you need to open this picture in photoshop.
Now you need to define the picture as a pattern (Edit>Define Pattern) that is in CS3
Name it what ever you like. When it come times to safe proof your picture create a new layer on top and go to (Edit>Fill) and chnage the first dropdown menu to pattern and select the Don't Rip pattern. You can change the opacity of the layer to make it more or les visible.
