Smudge...

Hello, of all tools in photoshop the Smudge tool is the one that i really can't use! Im trying to follow advanced tutorials now but i can't! Because somewhere they will get to the smudge part....and i just can't smudge! I looks all sharp and horrible and not smooth at all. It looks like big knifes and pillars coming out of the picture...so can anyone give me a tutorial so i can learn something about this thing? :)
