Spam Bots

Well this might stop spam bots for good. Not sure about it but I've seen this used on other Forums after spam bots problems and it completely stops it.
The idea is to require having an avatar. That way all the real members distinguish themselves while other dont.
Also to make a section without this rule applied to it. So the members having problems with it can ask there and the answer will be the same each time.
Or even make a section saying something like:
"Having Troubles posting?" and from there have it explained.
I know this might put a problem with people coming just to request but I thought it might be an idea to consider.

OR, you could just educate people on what are bots and what arent, and then you wont have people replying to bots that have dumb questions like what is the meaning of life or will the internet survive, stop talking to them, they'll stop coming.

Or upgrade to PHPBB3. Google has bots that kill other bots.
