Good start but I think you could do with having a bit more of a practise on cutting your render. The mouth looks very square. Try zooming in about 400% and then creating your path.
As for the background, try using some brushes, gimp doesnt come with many good ones, so try and download some from here, theres some brilliant ones on this site....

Make a large layer and have a practise with some of the brushes and youll find some favourites. :D

Sorry if it seems like im nit picking, im really not, just want to give you the best chance to improve and make some awesome sigs :D:D
And lead you in the direction as i went when i first started out. :D:D
But its excellent that youre trying them out and asking for tips.
